Economics

The study of how people, firms and societies use scarce resources — and of the choices, markets and policies that shape those decisions.

About Economics

Economics at the pre-university level introduces students to the principles that govern individual choice, market behaviour and the working of the economy as a whole. The course is divided into microeconomics — how households and firms make decisions and how markets coordinate them — and macroeconomics — how the economy behaves in aggregate, including national income, employment, money and the role of government.

The PU Economics course is taught mainly through theory, supported by simple numerical examples, diagrams and a study of the Indian economy. Students learn to read economic arguments, to use diagrams and basic data to support their reasoning, and to connect classroom concepts to the world they see around them — prices, employment, banking, trade and public policy.

At Janani PU College, Economics is offered as a core subject in the Commerce stream — in both the EBAS and EBAC combinations. The department emphasises conceptual clarity, careful use of diagrams and data, and the ability to reason about real economic issues.

Role of Economics in PU Education

Economics is a core subject in both Commerce combinations at Janani PU College — EBAS and EBAC. It carries significant weight in the Karnataka Pre-University Board examination and is a foundation subject for higher study in economics, commerce, management, business administration, finance, public policy, law and the social sciences.

The subject also develops a way of thinking — about trade-offs, incentives, costs and the consequences of choices — that is valuable in every walk of life, whether or not a student goes on to specialise in economics.

Learning Approach

Economics at Janani PU College is taught through structured theory classes supported by diagrams, simple numerical examples and discussion of the Indian economy. Concepts are introduced with real-world motivation, developed through worked examples, and consolidated through graded exercises. Diagrams — of demand and supply, cost curves, national income and the money market — are an essential part of the learning and assessment of the subject.

Students are encouraged to connect classroom concepts to current economic news and data, and to develop the habit of reasoned argument rather than memorisation. Periodic tests and revision sessions help students track their progress and prepare for the board examination.

Competitive Exam Relevance

The relevance of Economics to competitive examinations depends on each student's chosen combination and intended higher-education pathway. Economics may be relevant to entrance examinations for economics, commerce, management, business administration, law, public policy and the social sciences. For students on the EBAS and EBAC combinations, its relevance depends on the intended higher-education pathway.

Students should confirm the specific syllabus and weightage for the examinations relevant to their chosen combination and intended course of study. The college supports integrated coaching aligned with the PU syllabus, but does not guarantee any examination outcome.
