About Hindi

Hindi is the official language of the Union of India and one of the most widely spoken languages in the country. At the pre-university level, the study of Hindi combines language skills — reading, writing, comprehension and expression — with the study of selected literary works that represent the breadth of Hindi prose and poetry, from devotional and medieval traditions to modern literature.

The PU Hindi course is taught through prescribed prose, poetry and drama, supported by lessons on grammar, usage and composition. Students read and interpret literary texts, develop their own written expression, and learn to engage with the language as a living medium of thought, culture and communication across India.

At Janani PU College, Hindi is offered as a language option within the PU programme. The department encourages students to engage with the language both as a practical skill and as a window into the wider Indian literary and cultural tradition.
