About Kannada

Kannada is the official language of Karnataka and one of the oldest literary languages of India, with a continuous tradition of poetry and prose stretching back over a thousand years. At the pre-university level, the study of Kannada combines language skills — reading, writing, comprehension and expression — with the study of selected literary works that represent the range and depth of the tradition.

The PU Kannada course is taught through prescribed prose, poetry and drama, supported by lessons on grammar, usage and composition. Students read and interpret literary texts, develop their own written expression, and learn to engage with the language as a living medium of thought, culture and communication. The subject rewards careful reading and clear, well-organised writing.
